Nieuw Dakota
Guided tour of the exhibition by Silke Riis: The world has dropped its petals and I scooped them back up. The dying flower is a well-known symbol of mortality, but it is also a symbol of transformation. It marks the end of one thing and the beginning of another: fertilizing the soil and making space for new growth; forcing you to throw out the stagnant water from a vase, with the potential to take home new flowers. Silke Riis likes to think of her sculptures as plucked flowers: slowly aging and changing, browning and breaking, but precious because of it.
Beautiful Distress
Guided tour of the exhibition: Lights Out. A group exhibition about burnout among young people: Lights Out creates space to reflect on the pressures of daily life. Inspired by the documentary Fuel and sensory experiences, the exhibition explores the theme of burnout from various perspectives. The works mimic overstimulation, create moments of softness, provoke critical thinking, and tell the stories of six young adults who have experienced burnout. We live in a world where performance pressure and constant stimuli seem to be the norm, and burnout is becoming increasingly common. It is essential to not only seek individual solutions but also examine the societal context. Lights Out encourages critical reflection on how we treat each other and ourselves and aims to build a society where mental well-being is central. Artists: Alfhild Külper, Brandstof, Mart Veldhuis, Touki Delphine
Stichting NDSM-werf
Tour of the outdoor works Under Pressure and IN TUNE. On December 12, we will tour two outdoor artworks by NDSM artists. The first is Under Pressure by Catarina Garcia and Jim Du Pan, the winning submission of the 2023 NDSM Open Call. This monumental steel sphere towers above the shipyard. The foundation of the work is Crane 7, a half-sawn crane that once transported steel from the shipbuilding hall to the slipways, where ships were assembled. The second work, IN TUNE by Henk Schut, is located in the water near the Y-Slope. Schut, who has had a studio at NDSM for over 20 years, created a bronze tuning fork that produces sound every few minutes. Its contact with the water and the concrete of the Y-Slope generates ever-changing sounds, turning the entire location into an acoustic musical instrument.
Treehouse NDSM
Guided tour of the pop-up exhibition featuring the installation Creatures of Mass-Production & Reveries. Treehouse NDSM presents the 4th edition of its Pop-Up Exhibition project, a nomadic platform for exhibitions held in different spaces within Treehouse NDSM. Each month, a new project takes over a vacant space. For the 4th edition, the meeting room (yellow cabin on the 1st floor) will host Creatures of Mass-Production & Reveries, a sculptural art installation by Vico Persson. Discover the fusion of ready-made objects and organic materials in an evolving exhibition that unfolds over one month. Through a series of sculptures, Vico Persson explores the relationship between mass-produced commercial objects and organic, handmade expressions. By blending materials such as plastic bottles and cans with wood and clay, the project blurs the boundaries between the synthetic and the natural. It offers a space where these contrasting elements merge into unique, abstract sculptures that the artist considers "living beings."
