Program
Beautiful Distress
Just a century ago, women were discouraged from writing about personal experiences in psychiatric institutions. Any creative act was discouraged, even forbidden. The pen was the weapon of reason. To avoid being silenced, women in asylums embroidered their frozen cries into hospital gowns. For the exhibition "Weapon of Reason," writer Robin van den Maagdenberg designed textiles with fragments of old family photos and embroideries from the archive of the psychiatric institution Zon & Schild. During workshops with women who have (had) experience with psychiatry, these fabrics were embroidered with texts. The work in the exhibition gives a new twist to this centuries-old form of protest against the stifling of women's voices.
Nieuw Dakota presents the exhibition (+ Supplementary Fee) by Thordur Hans Baldursson. The exhibition offers a critical look at the challenges faced by artists and cultural institutions. Nieuw Dakota organizes a tour of the various works of art that offer visitors an ultimate experience by inserting a coin.
Young Curator Program Charmaine de Heij
Under the name 'Young Curator,' Stichting NDSM-werf annually invites a beginning curator to intervene in the public space of NDSM. This year, Stichting NDSM-werf and QISSA (the talent platform for storytellers, literary innovators, screenwriters, and stage performers) have joined forces. During NDSM Get Lost, you can come and see the program of this year's Young Curator: Charmaine de Heij, on the Y-slope of NDSM. During her program, Charmaine focuses on the inspiration that comes from personal and cultural heritage and leads to fuel for artistic expression. Who tells which story and why? By zooming in on the role that heritage and roots play in this, she hopes to create awareness about the importance of the correct contextual placement of art and the role of curators and to emphasize its importance.
Treehouse NDSM
Art Park II: Voice of Nature delves into the concept of granting rights to more-than-humans. Can we listen to what nature, including plants, birds, and insects, needs? Can we grant nature the same rights as humans? In this exhibition, a group of artists reflects on different approaches to answering these questions.
