ACT III: Beyond Expiration Date?
14 december, 20:00 - 22:30
Perhaps Nieuw Dakota's last night. Or maybe not? Have we managed to extend our expiration date?
Tonight, we reveal what our efforts of survival over the past few months have accomplished. Any which way, Nieuw Dakota will need to leave something behind, and we take this moment together with artists and audience to explore how one deals with loss.
What actions do we take to try to fix memories, shape impermanence? When the trail goes dead, can we swerve into clandestine practices to hold on to the communities we have formed over the years? We embrace finality as a poetic opportunity to come to terms with the inevitable. And, we turn ourselves inside out to make visible those things necessary to keep an art space like Nieuw Dakota operational.
This final act of Tense Tides marks the conclusion of a turbulent autumn. There will be laughter, dancing, crying and eating. We hope to celebrate our farewell, or perhaps our resurrection, with you.
Featuring work by:
An Ye Zhi de Jong
In her contribution to the third act of Gespannen Tijden (Tense Tides), an old work rises from the ashes for its final dance tonight. The Last Dance is a sculpture made entirely from waste materials, held together with iron and painted white. The sculpture mimics the shape of a skeleton and can stand on its own but also takes part in a performance where An Ye Zhi dances with it. Combined with the sculpture’s playful fragility during the performance, The Last Dance becomes an act of acceptance of inevitable finality.
Jojo Knowles
Nieuw Dakota, like a precious meal, is now being consumed. uncertainly dinner is an interactive performance by Jojo Knowles, in which the memory of a dinner that has already taken place is preserved through frantic drawings on the table. Using pencil and charcoal, the remnants of food, conversations, and spilled drinks are recorded in an effort to hold onto this cherished memory.
Ian Skirvin
Ian Skirvin's practice revolves around creating immersive installations and performances. His work explores the often holistic relationships between objects, environments, and audiences, employing a mix of new and found materials to evoke a sense of interconnectedness over time. His work Nymphaion (2024) serves as a sanctuary for the last believers in contemporary art. It is built from the same materials that once promised a hopeful future and a safe haven for artists and art enthusiasts.
Ferdinand Waas
born to runn by Ferdinand Waas is a sonic homage to cover versions often heard in bars or cafés—where limitations lead to reinterpretations rather than original expressions. Created for Nieuw Dakota’s farewell event Beyond Expiration Date?, this compilation of sung and hummed tunes by members of the Nieuw Dakota community, including former employees, visitors, and donors, reflects the bittersweet nature of endings, drastic cuts, and transformation.
And, a fiery performance by The Floorkillrz.
